November 2011
Intro
An apologetic welcome to the November newsletter, the first I have produced since the summer, after a very busy few months! During that time it is good to see a number of new faces at club meetings – hopefully you have found the club a friendly and helpful one.

Six Hour Build 2011
Sunday, November 27th is the date: IPMS Clacton’s base at The Brotherhood Hall is the venue: 10 a.m. is the start time, 4p.m. is the finish………and it can only be this year’s six hour build. As with last year, we will have an alternative aircraft or AFV choice of build, with choices to be notified to Bob in advance (that way I can pick up the kits from Hannants on my way home from work!). Food and drink is readily available either on site or from the (very) nearby supermarket , but please come armed with tools, paints and a sense of humour!
Last year, Jan made a Mustang and I made a mess. This year I aim to do better…
Themes for forthcoming Meetings
The December and January meetings follow a familiar and popular format that club regulars will be well familiar with. In December we will hold the “Land, Sea & Air” competition, in which participants need to bring in three models, one for each element of the theme (for example, a “Land” model could be a tank, a ship qualifies as “Sea” and “Air” usually means an aeroplane). Detailed rules are available on request, but do not forget that the competition replaces the normal monthly competition for that month, and is separate from it………so any models that you have brought in to club meetings earlier in the year are perfectly eligible.
December also forms the first part of the Christmas competition. Here, participants need to bring in an unbuilt kit, carefully wrapped up in seasonal fashion to conceal its identity. The kits are then redistributed so that everyone takes home a different kit to the one he (or she) brought in. Participants then have one month to build the models, either as per the kit or with whatever modifications and/or detailing they wish. Kits can be of any subject, old or new, the only proviso being that they should be injection moulded and simple enough to be built in the timescale.
Inevitably enough, the competition at the January 2012 meeting will be for the resulting models - please bring your efforts in, even if you were unable to complete the model! Modellers should note that although we are always keen to see models of any type at club meetings, no other models are eligible for the competition in January.
Also in January is the club AGM, when everyone will have an opportunity to air their views on how the club is run and (hopefully!) suggest some improvements.
Show Biz
At Brampton’s show in September, the club’s display of models marking 100 years of US Naval Aviation proved a success, despite the organisers squeezing us into a rather cramped corner of the hall. We had expected the trip to be our last show of the year, but the club was invited at short notice to appear at THE SUDBURY SKIRMISH - a new military hobby show at Great Cornard in Suffolk- on Saturday November 19th. Eric and Mike duly manned the club stand and came home with some top prizes in the competition, although the show proved to be a disappointingly modest affair.
This was in marked contrast to Scale ModelWorld 2011 at Telford the previous weekend. Although not an “official” club show and not featuring a club stand, SMW is the largest show of its type in the world, and several club members were in attendance. A particular mention ins due for those members who took part in the competition with success, including Eric and Geoff, who won their respective classes.
Turning to 2012, and the club already has received invitations to shows in the early part of next year: more details in the next newsletter.
Forthcoming Events
19th December: Club Meeting with Land, Sea and Air Competition, plus part 1 of Christmas Competition
16th January: Club Meeting with AGM, plus part 2 of Christmas Competition
NOTE: Members will doubtless have gathered that the hoped-for visit HMS Ocean in the autumn failed to materialize after all. Eric still hopes to mount this trip in the future.
